The HOUSE
where spirituality and cultural relevance come together

The HOUSE = Emergent Ministry, Emergent Church

Friday, February 18, 2005
When People ask exactly what the focus of The HOUSE actually is, our answer has often been: "To be postmodern"

But many people don't know what that means. It means "Emergent." It means reaching out to secular people in ways they understand and yet keeping our Christian ethics.

Why Be Involved with The HOUSE: Center for Arts, Entertainment and Community

Why be involved? The HOUSE: Center for Arts, Entertainment and Community, is intended to be on the frontlines of experimentation in spreading the Gospel message of Messiah Jesus. The HOUSE is determined to be at the forefront of the effort of reaching people for Jesus and doing so in ways that are culturally relevant. This means being open to, exploring, developing and experimenting with evangelistic strategies for reaching the Emergent Generation, while at the same time, focusing on the need for family-focused, cross-cultural ministry. Many thoughtful Christians agree that Modernity is passing and a new Postmodern world is emerging. This transition calls for innovative Christian leaders from all streams of the Christian faith around the world to collaborate in the development of new ways of doing mission outreach and understandings of mission, building new kinds of faith communities, new approaches to worship and service. The FactThe fact is, reaching secular people today, needs to be in a way they understand, on their terms, as they will not readily walk into a church building. However, reaching these people will take more than inviting them to participate in small groups, or church services that are completely foreign to their culturally secular upbringing. As Jesus said to his disciples, "The harvest is plenteous, but the laborers are few. Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth laborers into his harvest" (Matthew 9:37-38).If you share our heart for reaching the emergent and next generations for Jesus, we would love to have you standing with us!An Example of Postmodern MinistryThere are approximately 40,000 Jewish people in Minnesota, the majority of which live in the Twin Cities, mostly in the growing Southern suburbs. They are primarily secular, intellectual and open to spiritual things, Postmodern and tend toward alternative beliefs and lifestyles. They differ greatly from previous generations of Jewish people in that they tend to have little or no Jewish upbringing. They are most likely in an inter-faith marriage or relationship, meaning their partner is most likely someone who is from a non-Jewish background (Catholic or other "high church" ecclesiology). In other words, they are married to other Postmoderns. The issues they face concern how to raise their children as Jewish, Christian or some other religious expression (Wicca, Satanism, Bahai, Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormonism, etc); there is little or no place for them to turn for spiritual support in traditional Christian and Jewish communities, and a plethora of other places to turn and quite willing to help. A growing number of children from these interfaith relationships are of college-age and trying to discover their identity. Considering this one cultural group alone, taking into account the mix of Jewish and non-Jewish family (nominally or culturally Christian), extended family and other relationships, this amounts to a significant un-reached people group in our area alone. This is our North American future, the majority of whom are on the cutting edge of alternative religious and cultural experience. In other words, Postmodern.

What is The Center for Arts, Entertainment and Community?

Who we areThe HOUSE: Center for Arts, Entertainment and Community, is intended to be a multi-purpose, creative and experimental facility including all-purpose rooms suitable for Bible studies, prayer, recreation, conferences, banquets, businesses, Community Ed. Classes, discipleship classes, multiple simultaneous worship services. As well as places for retail businesses, including a Coffee House, a Night Club, an Arts and Entertainment Center, recording studios, performance stages, meeting and conference rooms, rehearsal space, green rooms, restaurants, book store, arts and crafts galleries and co-ops, children's play and teen areas, wired & wireless internet access. The HOUSE is intended to be foremost a PLACE where all people (including Christians) can come together for spiritual, social and educational growth. The HOUSE overall structure has no comparable examples to follow other than municipal community centers which do not have a purpose of reaching people for eternity and which are legally prevented from having an evangelistic focus. Some aspects of The HOUSE have comparable examples, but none match The HOUSE as a unified whole.Christian coffee houses exist, youth centers exist, Christian bookstores and businesses, as well. There is Christian nightclub in our hometown, for example, serving the Minneapolis downtown and the North Metro bringing in headliners and national acts, using paid and volunteer staff. They encourage and promote, but are not corporately involved with compassion ministries, or as a venue for non-headline talent. Other than churches and small youth centers, there are no other venues to showcase developing Christian talent, and the Twin Cities are known worldwide for their music and arts scene. It is our intent to provide these services and much more, in The HOUSE, making it a community resource. The goal of being a Center for Arts and Entertainment of all kinds (including for Christians), while also offering a family-friendly resource as a full-service community center, is our focus. We also seek to provide business and retail space for Christian companies and entrepreneurs, given them an opportunity to partner with others who share a similar vision of and message of Jesus in everyday, practical ways.
